Cold case: science in the face of crime

Cold case: science in the face of crime

One of my earliest cases (podcast France Info).

I was fortunate that the investigators and the magistrate trusted me as a young expert in a discipline that was brand new in France, BPA

This case left a deep impression on me. It enabled me to grasp the trust that the legal system places in experts and the consequences of our conclusions, right from my start. This was my second appraisal, out of a total of over 2,000 to date.

It consolidated my determination to develop methods recognized by my peers and which the legal system – investigators, magistrates, and lawyers should be able to understand and appropriate for themselves.

Even today, more than 20 years later, this case is still with me. Along with others, it continues to fuel my desire for accredited methods.

Half-year review

With the summer break just around the corner, it’s time to take stock of half a year’s work before taking a break for a month.

46 expert commission orders and requisitions representing 64 actions, i.e. 23 #BPA, 12 reconstructions, 11 compatibility studies, 9 3D #CRIM3.0 modeling, 3 bloodstains detections, 2 #VR and 4 miscellaneous.
44 reports sent
15 people trained, 13 at level 1 and 2 at level 2.
24 testimonies in front of Criminal courts.

Following the COFRAC audit of our structure in May, our ISO 17020 Quality accreditation was renewed. This continues to make us the only organization whose BPA methods and the initial and ongoing training of its personnel are verified and validated by an impartial international body.

Thank you for your confidence, and thank you to my team for their commitment.

20 years of BPA !!!

20 years of BPA !!!

On August 16, 2019, it will be 20 years since I discovered Bloodstain Pattern Analysis.

If it does not rejuvenate me, it allows me to see all the progress that has been made.

From a stammering discipline, it is today known and even recognized by the magistrates.

In recent years the hard sciences have invested the field to explain the main principles and allow a more rigorous foundation.

The accreditation that I succeeded in 2014 and that I renew this year ensures to our customers that the work carried out follows a real methodology.

This anniversary leads me to go back to look at how far I have come and to see that BPA must always progress.

First use of Virtual Reality for Justice

First use of Virtual Reality for Justice

Reconstitution of facts using the modeled place because the real no longer exists.

The term “virtual reality” (or immersive multimedia or computer simulated reality) refers to a computer technology that simulates the physical presence of a user in an artificially generated software environment.

It creates a real or imaginary environment in which the user can interact. It can explore an environment, manipulate objects or perform a series of actions in a virtual world.

The purpose of virtual reality is to conduct a sensorimotor and cognitive activity in a digitally created world, which can be “imaginary, symbolic or a simulation of certain aspects of the real world” (extract from the Virtual Reality Treatise, P. Fuchs)

Virtual reality is not to be confused with augmented reality, which adds virtual elements in a real environment whereas virtual reality virtually creates a real or imaginary environment.

BLOODSTAIN PATTERN ANALYSIS – A methodical approach

I am very proud to announce the release of my book edited by Presses polytechniques et universitaires romandes. The book lists the tools, information and methods to perform a BPA objectively. An atlas and a key of identifications are even presented.
